Education provides the path to future success

With a start-up grant from the IBU Foundation, that was matched by ROOTS of South Sudan, a new secondary school scholarship program was launched in February, 2024. Nineteen high school girls and seventeen boys, who are family members of thirty ROOTS women, received funding for a year’s tuition at the high school in Juba that best meets their needs. ​  Some students are just beginning their high school education; several are fourth year students. But all share one thing in common: paying school fees this year was very challenging for their families. Individual scholarships averaged $150.

The scholarship program was renewed in 2025 with a private grant of $9729 and funded 66 students, representing 40 Roots families. In a Roots survey every member ranked education of family members as one of the highest priorites,
